Today's castle and grounds near Sangerhausen (southern Saxony-Anhalt) is an amalgam of constructions from the 15th to the 18th centuries atop the site of the old Allstedt Imperial Palace, visited by almost every German ruler from 935 to 1200. The oldest part of the Castle is the Kernburg, now a museum, whose main attraction is its late Gothic fortress kitchen with one of the largest chimney-pieces ever seen in European castle construction.

Reformer Thomas Müntzer gave his famous "Fürstenpredigt" sermon in the castle chapel.
