This was done for the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. In 2001, a flag was painted here, which is currently visible in Bing's east birds eye view.

The message in the grass refers to a student who passed away in 2011. 15 year-old Calum J. Rintoul died in a car accident. His obituary mentions that he was an avid skier.
