The Val Verde Foundation took over in 1999, when Austin died. The estate was once a retreat for the gay cultural elite.

The foundation sold the house to Sergey Grishin, who bought it out of bankruptcy, for $15.3 million.

Grishin sold Val Verde to neighbour Peter Muller, a quantitative trader who once worked at Morgan Stanley, for $14.8 million.
