The third HMAS Stuart (FFH 153) is an Anzac class frigate, laid down by Tenix Defence Systems at Williamstown in Victoria on 25 July 1998, launched on 17 April 1999 by Mrs. Maxine Barrie, the wife of Admiral Chris Barrie, the Chief of the Defence Force and commissioned on 24 August 2002.
HMAS Stuart derives her name from the Scottish Royal House of Stuart. The Royal Navy first used the name for one of the nine Scott Class Destroyers built between 1917 and 1919. HMS Stuart commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1918 and in 1933 she was loaned by RAN from the Admiralty, along with three 'V' Class Destroyers, Vampire, Vendetta and Voyager; and the 'W' Class Destroyer Waterhen.
The traditions and values established by the first HMAS Stuart were passed down to her successors, HMAS Stuart (II) the River Class Destroyer Escort that served from 1963 to 1991, and HMAS Stuart (III) Anzac Class Frigate which commissioned in 2002.
