The Bathoen Dam, also known as the Mmakgodumo Dam, named after Kgosi Bathoen II, who ruled the Bangwaketse for 41 years and died in 1990.

The dam was build in 1940. Between the period of 1942 and 1943, Bathoen II established an agricultural project called the Bathoen Irrigation Scheme which was followed by a programme designed to feed school children with the gardens produce in 1943/1944.

Popular activities includes fishing and bird viewing and visitors can also explore the Pharing forestry, the gorge, and a cave for the brave hearts. All these sites are located in the Bathoen Dam Bird Sanctuary.
