Belleville High Banks is one of America's crown-jewel dirt oval race tracks. Originally a flat racing surface, it held its first auto race on July 4, 1910. Horses and motorcycles primarily raced here in the early years. In the 1950's, the flat track was elevated with 23 degree, 18 feet tall bankings.
The track hosts different forms of auto racing throughout the year, but its most prestigious annual event is the Belleville Midget Nationals. Since 1978, many of the world's best midget car drivers have gathered here in August for the Nationals.
Despite its circular shape, today's racers usually drive the entire lap without lifting the throttle pedal, making it the fastest half-mile dirt oval track in the world.
