There appear to be small encampments at either end of the boomerang, and a thin circle in the middle of the crux.

whereis.com shows the diagonal road leading straight to the crux of the boomerang, with a road heading due east from where it turns.

Maybe some kind of range or target. The trail in the SW corner leads west to the target end of what is clearly a small arms firing range.
