William D. Phillips, Sr. was an attonrey and lobbyist who had served as Legislative Direcor and Chief of Staff for former longtime Alaska Senator Ted Stevens. Stevens, Phillips, and 3 others were killed in Alaska on August 9, 2010 in a plane crash while on their way to a private lodge for a fishing trip. Former NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe and his son survived. Stevens was known for serving 40 years in the Senate, making him the longest serving Republican senator in history. Mr. Phillips had been a guest lecturer on Legislation and Congressional Procedure at Georgetown University Law Center and the Brookings Institute. He was also a member of the Board of Regents for Georgetown University and served on many corporate boards. His teenage son survived the crash. He lived in Germantown, MD.
