The Battle of Black Jack took place on June 2, 1856. Led by the abolitionist John Brown, anti-slavery forces attacked an encampment of Henry Pate. The battle is considered an example of "Bleeding Kansas" and was a contributing factor in the build up to the American Civil War of 1861 to 1865.
