The Buran spacecraft was a Soviet orbital vehicle similar in function and design to the US Space Shuttle. Buran completed one unmanned spaceflight on November 15, 1988.

Energia was a Soviet rocket that was designed to serve as a heavy-lift expendable launch system as well as a booster for the Buran spacecraft. There were two launches of the Energia.
