In 1942 the US Army Air Force took over Lubbock Municipal Airfield and transformed it into South Plains AAF which soon became the largest combat glider training facility in the world.

The C-47 gate guard to the original terminal celebrates this history was C-47s were the primary tow aircraft for US combat glider operations.
