The purpose of the Solar Calendar Project is to establish a monument for César Chávez, labor and civil rights leader, environmentalist and proponent of non-violent social action. The form of the memorial will be that of an ancient solar calendar. It will be a work of public art that mixes ancient architecture with educational activities and community celebration.
The project will
* provide a context for reconnecting with the rhythm of the seasons
* honor the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez
* promote environmental stewardship
* create a place of unity, reflection and renewal
The proposed memorial solar calendar will be installed on a 2.5 acre site at César Chávez Park on the waterfront in Berkeley, California within the next three years.
