You wouldn't even recognize the place any more. Carney park is still open but all of the other facilities are gone. Completely new everything has been built at two new sites, one at the airport and another north of town.

I lived alternately in Parco Azzurro from 76-80! Dan Limbaugh here for anyone who stumbles on this! Carney was awesome. After a full day away from parents sliding down the pipes, climbing up to dead man's, and swimming, we'd watch both movies before heading home for a few hours of sleep before doing it all over again! Awesome childhood! Life without TV, video games, etc was actually a good time kids!

Man...those were the days. My family was lucky because my father served in Naples TWICE...'77 to '80 and '83 to 90. I was born in '74, so I basically GREW UP there. With all the changes that have taken place in Naples since we left, it's great to see that Carney Park is still laid out basically the SAME way it was 20 and even 30 years ago. Even though we had access to arcades, Atari,Commodore computers and SEB-TV by the mid-80s, I still think growing up there made us far more industrious than our state-side peers. There were so many OTHER things for us to do. What's really crazy is that because I spent most of my childhood overseas, I thought EVERY kid lived like that. Coming back to the States permanently was a shock that I STILL haven't recovered from half a lifetime later. Hoping to go back and teach at the new NAHS and give my own a kids a small taste of what I had.

I too was a Navy Brat...grew up in Arco Felice '72-'74....was some of the best times of my life and yes there was an outdoor theatre located up front by the enterance...Oh how I miss those simpler days where all I cared about was exploring the rim around Carney Park and playing basketball. Look the special services for letting me and my sibling check out the various equipment they had ( aka basketballs, bats. mits etc.)

If anyone i know stumbles across this my name is John mitchell.

Reading these comments brings back memories. We were in Parco Azzurro from 75-79- lived on Via Drago. Dan Limbaugh's comments are dead-on. No TV, just playing Guard the Wall at the parco pool, playing baseball at Carney park, no TV, skateboarding down the hill.... it's all coming flooding back. My name's John Kinsley, graduated h.s. in '88 to give some perspective.

I lived in Arco Felice from '69 to '73. Our school bus stop was at the Piazza (a rubbish dump), spent endless summers climbing on the crater and taking the train into AFSOUTH for the double feature and bowling league at AFSOUTH on Saturday mornings. Boy Scout camporees at Carney Park and playing under the bleachers during the football games. No TV, just dozens of friends playing chase and tag in the streets and across the vineyards until early evening. Some of my favorite memories.

I too have fond memories of Carney Park. Ben Zaslow here - lived in Licola Mare from 1975 to 1979. Forrest Sherman class of 1977. Worked during the summers as the NSA Photo lab, and on the LST craft which cruised the bay of Naples resupplying the sixth fleet (mostly the carriers). My Dad was the Science Advisor. Great times...skipping school and catching the aliscafi to Capri...what a life!

Hi everybody! Derek Hightower here. 1974-1978. My parents ran the teen club for a couple of years. Naples was the best place to be as a kid. No tv or video games but I don`t ever remember being bored. Lived in Parco Palumbo and there were always friend to do things with from daylight to dark. Carney Park was my favorite place as a kid. I`m always showing Carney Park on google earth to my friends and new family members. This website shows it better though. Hope to hear from some old friends. I`m on classmates.com.

I have wonderful memories of Carney Park from 1967-68. Robert Couey here- I spent many hours digging up the old WWII ammunition that had been detonated there after the war. I still have my collection of old relic finds! I lived off Via Tasso right down the hill from the back of the elementary school. Sometimes I would run through the vineyard as a short cut to my house and get chased by the Count's guard dogs. What a great life and thanks dad (rest his soul) for giving me the best life as a kid abroad. I'm taking my wife and son over this in June to give them the opportunity to experience it too. I wonder if Mrs. Massa or Mrs. Federico, my 5th grade teachers are still over there.

Was on the Drill Team and still have the uniform:@) We also went to drive-in movies there. Our family lived on Via Manzoni so I walked to FSHS and back everyday. Then school started late, like 10 a.m. and got home at 4. Nothing but good memories and traveling the country with the teams!!

Wow! Derek Hightower from Parco Palumbo? Is this the same guy we used to call the Evil Knievel of the Parco? We would build crappy makeshift ramps and jump over stuff with our banana seat bikes on the dirt mounds. I remember you taking it to a new level by strapping on a helmet and jumping over 1-3 trashcans on the STREET with your bicycle.

Other fond Parco Palumbo memories; Stealing the farmers boats, playing at the ruins, fishing with bread and cheese in Lago Di Patria (those weird eels), shooting rats with a pump bb gun at the dump, Estes rockets, Rin-Tin-Tin Gum, rock fights, haunted houses, jar of Nutella with a loaf of real Italian bread, comic book sales, chasing the dog catcher(killer) out of the Parco. GREAT TIMES!! Jeff Latham, Army Brat Naples 72-75.

Carney Park is one of the greatest secrets in Naples. Although the word is out now that local hires are allowed use of the park. Since the NAVY moved everything north, the park gets very little use. Lucky for me I live very close (Lucrino) and visit a couple days a week to let the dogs run.

I was homeported in naples from 69-71 and played at carney park three or four times a week when the ship was in port. It was the only place where enlisted and officers co-mingled. I bought a ping putter there from the pro shop and still have it. It is a collector's item and have had many offers to buy it, but i won't let it go!

We lived off base in Parco Andromeda (Pozzuoli) so Carney Park was my after school program. Let's just say even my generation enjoyed the activites Carney Park offered, we could wait to catch our Mercedes charter school bus to Carney Park. As a child things are just enjoyable different overseas. My mother say life was easier overseas, less stressfull on the kids yet full of creative fun things to do. Carney Park ROCKS!!!

Marianne Williams here - I lived in Parco Azzurro in 1967-68, in 7th and 8th grade. Memories are kind of fuzzy, but I have spent over 40 years wishing I could find a REAL neapolitan pizza in the states... I also remember the church about halfway up the hill that had rooms with dirt floors that were open -kids would go in there to smoke cigarettes when we were walking up and down the hill to catch the school bus at the bottom. I also remember the store at the bottom that sold big sugar covered donuts. Farms at the top of the hill above the top road of houses that raised rabbits (for eating) that were in big "dens" in holes in the ground.

Is Carney Park still layed out like this? My father is being deployed to Naples soon, and I'd like to know a few things.
There seems to be a paintball-like field there. Is it really a paintball field?
If so, does it do airsoft?
Thanks for your help.

In 74 and 75, when Forrestal was in port. We would take the bus from fleet landing to Carney Park. Spent one night in the woods on the east rim. The security guys would drive around at night, yelling into the woods that we would all be arrested. They never came in after us. One of my shipmates and I jumped the pool fence and skinney dipped for about 20 mins. at like 3 AM then high tailed it back into the tree line. My best memory of Carney Park!

David Wills here. I was in 8th thru 10th grade from '71 to '74, lived in Parco Azzurro 20 minutes distance from Carney Park on our 10-speeds. Learned to play racketball and golf there, a sergeant type showed me the kill shot idea. I thought I was the only one ever to go to the building on top (a monastery?), passing thru the crater hillside farms with their shacks. Once a crazed dog charged us, rabid I thought, one of those vivid shocking events that burned forever in the mind. And waking early dew-soaked morning after sleeping bag night. Some chocolate bars were 8 cents at the little store. I had a pool phobia then and so didn't swim. I sometimes think about being in the central parking lot, one of my strange obsessive thoughts. I saw fast pitch softball for the first time at Carney.
Is it just the universal tendency to idealize the carefree days of childhood and youth, or was it some combination of mezzogiorno warmth, tufa, semi-exotic locale and customs, stone oven-baked pizzas, privileges of military socialism, lizards basking in the sun, the apricot tree, the persianas, a paradise lost that tugs my heart so. Tears have come to my eyes thinking of this.

Wow, just found this site looking up google maps of Carney Park. I lived in Parco Azzuro from 74-78. I was 5 years old thru 8 years old. I remember all you kids. I had an Indian motor cycle that my dad got me as a kid. I remember a huge great dane coming out to try to eat me down a dead end street at Parco Azzuro. We lived next door to the man that had the Airplane in his yard. We later moved up to the top of the hill to a larger house. I remember you guys jumping garbage cans. I remember Carney Park like yesterday, T-ball... now that I read all this stuff. Oh boy... this is a cool find. My Dad worked for 3M company.
I also remember then making a movie in Carney Park. I cant think of the actors name... but he was popular. I remember Terrence Hill movies. haha. Sheesh... this is all coming back.

I live in Parco Cuma 1973 - 1976, Wes Davis here. Was hoping that Mark Baker had posted.

I guess I was running around Carney Park with all of you too. The memories of playing baseball will live with me forever.

Funny to remember back, but the greatest thing was, at the end of the games, one of the parents was to being a cooler of soda's. And we each could have ONE after the game. I remember sitting on the grass, behind the dugout, thinking this was the greatest thing ever.

Wes - that, and playing pin-ball and listening to Kansas blare out of the juke box. (I think it was a Kiss pin ball machine? wesleyrdavis@hotmail.com

Where can you start describing something you love so much?! My first loves, kiss, danger, excitement. Blew up my lip with a flare (can't tell by looking now) The smell of the gym at NSA on Saturday, riding the pipes at Carney, rock fights I regret, missing the bus every other morning at the bottom of the Parco and worse, hitch hiking at only 12 yrs with my buddy Dave. What about playing ditch til dark! Or swiping candy and lady fingers from the ''old lady tobacci"? Oh, as if you think you love all this as much as the next contestant, Mark Baxely marrying his Naples sweetheart 20 years later in America is putting money on our memories (not that marriage is a money thing just mean...oh you know).
You can't find a group of people so in love with a life like you do us with Naples....so why isn't there a resort there for us? I mean, I have stayed in hotels and resorts that I knew nothing about, just for R&R on some beach with which I have no connection. But we could have a real place of memories to retire to or snow bird away with friend we may never have even met but through these common memories...and thats good enough for me. daniel@davenportnelson.com

My dad was stationed at Afsouth from 80-83, out of Building L. I had my first espresso there at 10- what was my mom thinking??
We lived in Parco Azzurro. I remember running around playing army, finding the old fighter jet.
I attended Pinetemare Elementary and Forrest Sherman and I still think of them when I hear a Ratt or Motley Crew song!
I still remember when they put the McDonalds in at NSA! They had to take out the Galaga to make room so I was a little bummed!
GREAT memories- swimming, eating, Carney Park, Squeeze Alley, teremotos, Humpty Dumpty, Vesuvio, Atari.....

(Continuation from previous post)

Oops! The hardest part of being a military brat is remembering WHEN you were stationed WHERE!
We were stationed in Naples in 83-86, NOT 80-83.

And I remembered a few more "growing up in Napoli moments"-

The mudslide that blocked the road to NSA and school.
The "Tape Club" at Afsouth where you could borrow VHS tapes of shows like Family Ties, The Cosby Show, Knight Rider, etc

Lived in Naples from 74-76 on via domenziana (spelling?) just south of pinetamare. Carney park was certainly a highlight. I remember making a movie in 6th grade all about the pioneers because it was the bicentennial. We filmed up by the hospital. Also Mr. Clark (5th grade pinetamare) was a great teacher. Big, tall guy with a flaming red beard. Wayne "Eddy" Rouse

Mike Fisher here.
I was in naples from late 68 to middle 1970.
Lots of great memories of the park, played Little League baseball, Pop Warner football, the movies, Y'all remember every evening "Attention to Colors..Attention to Colors" and we all had to stop and face the flag as they lowered it for the night?

Made the Little League All Stars and we ended up coming in 2nd in all of Europe in 1969.
We lost to Weisbaden in the championship game that would have allowed us to advance to Williamsport for the L.L. World series.. Damn Weisbaden!

So enjoy seeing all of the comments about Carney Park-was there in '77 w/brother and his family, I came there to be a mother's helper when my niece was born. Loved to go and watch the baseball games and see the outdoor movies (I remember seeing Car Wash!) Long time ago.....Such a beautiful place-remember Festa Americana, surrounded by a gorgeous ring of mountains. Hope someday to get back and see it again.

Stationed in Naples 69-72 with COMSUBFLOT8 at AFSOUTH. Many nice times spent at Carney Park. We did no have all
the things that are there now. We had handball courts, drive-in movie, and football and baseball fields. I was lucky enough
to live off base... at Licola Marina (spelling could be wrong) about 10 miles from AFSOUTH. Many of my Navy friends had
apartments at the beach. Our balcony overlooked the Med, and a 20 second walk put us on the sand. Winters, we were the
only people living there. Summer was many thousands at beach. Enjoyed reading other comments from ex-Naple residents

Wow! I have enjoyed reading posts from those who shared such happy childhood memories of Naples, Italy. We lived in Pinetamare from 1975 - 1979 in the first Western Tower. At the time, there was only 3. I too had the best time of my life playing on the beach everyday in the summer and softball at Carney Park! Derek, your mother gave us a wonderful gift when she organized that beautiful 8th grade prom :-). Jackie Carroll, Augusta, GA.

I lived in Naples from 1961-64. My dad was stationed at AFSouth and I went to Forrest Sherman Elementary School...I think it was on Via Oratzio or Pocilipo...something like that. We lived in the Chocolate Building (everyone called it that because it was painted brown) on Via Ortensio and had a great view from there of Vesuvius and the palm tree (they took lots of photos of the volcano from the side of the hill there. We used to play on the "goats trail" on that hill and harass the Italian Romeos with their girlfriends who would go down the trail for a getaway. I'm sure they were annoyed with us. Carney Park was a great place and I played little league baseball there. Sounds like it's expanded a bit since I lived there! Great memories and would love to return there someday.

My name is Tairsa Worman (formerly Swenson) I lived in Naples from 1980 to 1983, went to Pinetamare Elementary.

My older brother is Jimmy Swenson. I also have 2 older stepsisters Kristen & Jodie Brunsting that would come and visit every summer. We lived in Parco Auzzuro and lived in a house just up the street from the entrance. My step-father was in the Air Force. When we first arrived in Naples we lived in the 'Tennis Hotel' until our house in Parco Auzzuro was ready.

The 3 years spent living in Italy was a magical experience. I remember long summer days spent at the pool, with Enzo in his tiny speedo yelling endlessly at my brother and his friends. Long dinners at the pizzeria, playing 'parco ditch' until it got dark, the old plane we weren't suppose to crawl on. Does anyone remember the Walker twins Kelly and Tracy? They had 2 older brothers, Keith and Todd maybe?

I also had Mr. Kenny for 3rd grade. Kelly and I had Mrs. Matulla for 2nd grade... we were so bad in class together the she duct taped us to our seats!

My husband and I are planning a trip to Europe next fall and I want to take a trip to the neighborhood. Has anyone been there recently and have an exact address?

Cheers!
Tairsa

Fond memories of Carney Park, and Forrest Sherman school remember getting Bus 13, And sometimes 14, the latter always seemed a faster more modern coach! Played lots of softball, kickball?? I had hoped to find people from mid 80s. Navy brat from 85-88. Went and lived at Carney Park in the summers, played soccer, baseball and softball. The pool was our refuge. Many, many, many hikes up to the monestary. We had no TV or phones so the life was outside. Took a bus from near our house, to the bsse, then to Carney park. Parco Residentiale, it was 1/2 mile from parco pulambo. I think brats grow up with a loss of whwre am.I from. Watched a video on the Towers being demolished and was sad. Therese Popchak (Bieber)

We lived in Parco Azzuro from 71-74. The Vierras. I am Lisa. My father was at Afsouth. Attended school for 5th through 8th at Forrest Sherman Elem in the horseshoe. Teachers I remember - Mr. Richards who wore kimonos, Mr. Lyons who was the best ever, Mrs. Walsh who was a fantastic science teacher. Miss Callahan, social studies, Mrs. Federico who taught art and music and was my brothers 6th grade teacher. Mr Migliahci for science. Trying to remember the name of the suave English teacher with the little beard. Sweeney, maybe. Of course there was Mr Stanley for band and chorus. He organized our ski trips too. Mr Silverstein for PE. His daughter was one of my best friends. Loved Carney Park, exploring the caves at Cuma, swimming at Parco Azzuro.
David Walsh who posted earlier was a friend of my brother Kent. His sister and I were in Girl Scouts.

Scott Waddell you lived up the bend from us on the way to the Burnett's and Coiner's house. Your sister was in my Girl Scout troop. Some one mentioned Robert Havard. He distinguished himself on the middle school ski trip to Roccarossa by eating the fish's eye on a dare at dinner. Colleen Kearney, I believe I remember you. Our house in Parco Azzuro was a few houses up from the pool. About three houses from the club house. Villa Cherie. I have actually been working on a novel loosely based on those days.

Oh! What about Edenlandia.

To the commenter above who lived in Parco Azzuro from 71-74. I had many of the same teachers you had. I had Mr Richards for 5th grade from 71-72. We may have been in the same class! I think he actually wore those 60's Nehru jackets instead of kimonos. I hadn't thought of that in years. The Stanley's were good friends of ours and his son Jay (who was your and my age) and I had regular sleepovers. Mr Stanley lives in the SF Bay area now but I've lost track of Jay.

To Kjfitz - We may have had classes together later, in 6th or 7th I didn't actually have Mr. Richards, but he was so vivid he looms large in my memory. I had Mr. Lyons. Loved that man. I still count him as one of the best teachers I ever had. As a teacher now, I often model my practices on him, especially his respectful address of children. Granted, my first day of 5th grade he told me the kindergarten was downstairs. Easy mistake considering my size, plus I was wearing a "Buffy" from Family Affair dress, size 6. I was so small. I finally located him after all these years. He died in Sarasota a few years ago. Someone wrote in the memory book something any Mr. Lyons student knew, "please rewrite in accordance with accepted usage and style." This could have to do with anything from spelling, format, grammar or poor penmanship.
Kids of our era will also remember Mr. Stanley's musical productions. I was in the King and I. He also did Tom Sawyer with Lisa Emick as Becky Thatcher and another time Fiddler on the Roof. I am under Lisa Vierra-Moore on Facebook. There is a pic there of the King and I. If you were still there then, you may recognize some familiar faces. I am the small one kneeling with short dark hair. I think that particular one is set to public setting. It might be interesting to start a Forrest Sherman page there.

@David Wills - I too was chased by the dogs from the farmer who owned the shack property with the goats. There was rumor that they had a pellet gut with corn shots filled with salt (I have no idea if those exist). Remember the bells the goats wore? My dad was stationed there from 1990-1993 and I was 10-13yrs old. We lived in Parco Azzurro. I ended up babysitting the neighborhood military kits A LOT while the parents went to the pizzeria at the bottom of the hill. Our house didn't have heat so we used bombala (spelling?) heaters and the electricity would go out all the time so we had kerosene lanterns. Or maybe my dad was cheap?

I had been to Naples many times while on deployments, but this was the first time my wife and son got to be there, and when we found out that we were standing inside a Volcano....my wife was like, we gotta go....we gotta go now. Yes, while we were there, it did "Burp" a couple of times, but it had been doing that for a long time. I know they said it was a dead or dormant volcano.....BUT.....lolol

Lived there (as au pair to American naval families) 1973 and 1974. We used to go to the drive in movies as well and sit in the car watching them - something new to me, being English! Good memories of a virtual piece of Americans at leisure, in the middle of a volcano!
Lived at Arco Felice; near Licola and Cuma in both gated communities and also next to the buffalo field on the beach by the sea - you had to run through the trees when the buffalo were far away and hope they didn't follow you into the water, as you hopped over the burning sand, laying down a towel to walk on so you didn't burn. Fantastic years! Santana still ringing in my ears! :-) xx

My name is Chris and I was stationed in Agnano from spring '91 until spring '94 more or less. Worked for NSA Agnano military police (Navy police). Rented a house in Lago Patria. I've lost touch with everyone I knew there. Spent many nights on guard duty at Carney Park. It was a fun place.

Sounds like Naples was a great duty station to be a kid in. I was single so I knew very few families and none of the kids. We were a bunch of bachelors running around hanging out, eating pizza, working on cars, watching movies on VHS or the base theater. Just as I got good at living in Naples my time was up.

Like someone up thread said - I don't know what it was - the mezzogiorno food or the light or the leaded gasoline fumes or the age I was at the time but I had a wonderful time. My work place could be a mess - high school quality drama - but liberty time was fun. I hope to take my family back one of these days soon and spend about two weeks in Italy roaming around.

Hello my name is George Gibson and my father Paul Gibson ,USAF Cryptographer was stationed at AFSOUTH in Naples Italy from 1972-76. Unlike alot of the posts I in lived Parco Del Pino, Via Epomeo in Soccavo. Clearly the best time of my life in hindsight. I truly grew up there, learned Italian which I still can speak today brokingly and spoke Greek as well because of my mother being Greek. Went to Forrest Sherman Elementary school, older sister went to Naples High School. I still remember a lot of my friends name, Greg Vautier, Mike Reynolds, Ricky Bell. Played basketball at the gymnasium next to the school. It was brand new then, team name was the Crusaders, played football (team name Rams)at Carney Park and baseball. At that time it was AYSO. American youth sports organization. Still remember my coaches name Tyrone Howell. Remember all the, time at the pool, Drive in theater, snack bar, hike, picnics. Yes remember my teacher's name was Mr. Richard's, he was such a dresser, drove a yellow VW and I believe he had a crush on another teacher Mrs. Bell. I forgot my music teachers name but he wore glasses and taught me how to play the trumpet. I remember NSA ,commissary and PX or BX next door, the hospital on the hill where my youngest sister was born. Remember our family driving to Brindisi every summer to spend our vacation in Athens Greece. Such great memories, my father has since passed away in 2007 but I converted his movie camera film from 8mm to DVD. So much to talk about and reminisce but I would be here for the next week doing so but with that being said I wouldn't change anything for the time I was a child and early teenager in Naples Italy. We got the chance to learn and explore a beautiful country. I currently live in southern California Palm Springs area. If anyone would like to talk about the beautiful past contact me at: gjgibson1961.gg@gmail.com or (951)500-6784. Enjoy your life for tomorrow isn't promised. ????

Nearby was Vess Henderson (navy) and some British kids. I remember one teacher: Miss Edgecomb. Played baseball every year at Carney, capo jr fliers! Swam, watched movies, fireworks, camping, hanging out on the score boards, eating grilled cheese from the snack bar - listening to Wings playing over the radio. Biking all over the place. An amazing time, glad I got to grow up there in stead of the US. Shout outs to Steve Keeping - home run king, and Denny Seals!
