The impressive fortress was built by Voluto da Dionigi the Great in 402 B.C. to fend off an impending attack by the Carthaginians.
The castle, grounds and walls, cover a good 27 kilometers.
It represents the most majestic fortified castle in all the antique world. Surprisingly, it was built in only 6 years.
This would seem fairly impossible in view of the moats and underground tunnels , the powerful walls, the enormity of the structure.
The complexity of the ancient architecture and the breathtaking scenery of the surroundings make an excursion to the castle a definite must. |
