The Castillo de San Felipe de Lara is a Spanish colonial fort built in 1644 that protected the entrance to Lake Izabal. The point on the lake was strategically important as it connected the Caribbean Sea and the Dulce River which was used by the Spanish to transport goods. The area was under constant attack from pirates.
