Crane was the owner of Crane Co., founded by his father in 1855, today a multi-billion dollar industrial products manufacturer. The mansion was completed in 1928. After his wife died in 1949, the property was given to The Trustees of Reservations, a private, non-profit land conservation and historic preservation organization.

It was a filming location for "The Witches of Eastwick", "Flowers in the Attic" and "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past".
