Cocky the Gamecock is the official mascot of the University of South Carolina. Cocky made his first appearance ay Homecoming on October 16, 1980 as the son and replacement for "Big Spur". Cocky was seen as too undignified and was booed off the field. Slowly Cocky gained acceptance, first as the mascot for the women's teams and later for all of the teams.
