Col. Richard Lathers was a cotton broker, banker, insurance executive and railroad director. After the Civil War, in which Lathers served in the Union forces, he returned to Charleston to help rebuild South Carolina. He invited military and political leaders from the North and South to receptions in his mansion, hoping to bring about a reconciliation.
