Sitting on the ancestral land of the Lee family, Coton Hall was built in the 1800s for Harry Lancelot Lee. The land has been in the family since the 1300s.

A number of members of the Lee family moved to America in the 1600s including Richard Lee I who was a tobacco baron and the largest landholder in Virginia. His grandsons, Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee were signers of the Declaration of Independence. Richard Lee I was also the great-grandfather of President Zachary Taylor. Henry Lee III was a soldier in the American War of Independence and was the father of Confederate General Robert E. Lee
