This may be the first house fully designed by Ray Crites - but - his first construction drawings of a house was the one I grew up in, in Ames, Iowa. Ray was a student at Iowa State College in the early 50's and was paid by my parents to take the floor plan that my mother had generated and create drawings for the builder, Gunder Fjare. Gunder did not want to build with the flat roof as designed, so the house was built with a hip roof. However, there was a significant eaves depth for its day. Also, the house was built on high a hill facing the street with no access directly based on the address. The entry was from another street from the rear. The "front" of the house had a walk-out basement, unusual for that period. Address is 1511 13th St. Ames, Iowa.
