"Dirtiest" power plant is right here in the Bay Area
Crystal River, Florida-- A Crystal River coal-burning power plant has once again been named as one of the dirtiest plants in the nation.

It is the third straight year that a nonprofit Environmental Integrity Project in Washington has ranked Progress Energy as one of the top 50 polluters.

Its total output of four harmful substances, including sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and mercury, is claimed to be harmful to public health and the environment.

The plant has four coal-fired units and an nuclear power generator, and is considered as one of the largest coal-burning plants in the country.

It generates about half of the electricity used by Progress Energy's more than one (m) million customers in Florida.

Progress Energy says scrubbers to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions and technology to cut emissions will be installed by 2009.
