The monument to Daniel O'Connell took over twenty years from conception to completion. A subscription was started for a monument in 1962, 15 years after O'Connell's death, with the foundation stone being laid in 1864. The monument was finally unveiled on 15 August 1882. On close inspection, bullet holes can be seen on the statue from the Easter Uprising in 1916.
