Regarded as a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, Bryant was listed as the No. 9 wide receiver prospect in the class of 2007. Recruited by numerous major programs, including most Big 12 schools, Bryant took official visits to Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech, before committing to the Oklahoma State Cowboys where he played for two years. He was considered the best receiver in 2009 and a possible Heisman contender before being suspended for an NCAA Rules violation, having interaction with Deion Sanders, a former NFL player. He then entered the 2010 NFL Draft, where he was widely believed to be the best wide receiver available. Initially, scouts placed him to be drafted by the Denver Broncos, but dropped off their board due to character concerns. The Dallas Cowboys traded up from the 27th to the 24th position to select Bryant.

Dez Bryant is considered a flashy, athletic player who is no stranger to controversy. He inspires as much love for his playing abilities in Dallas as hate by those in opposing cities. He wears the number 88 which was also worn by Drew Pearson, a Cowboys legend, as well as Michael Irvin, the Hall of Famer. In 2015, the Dallas Cowboys placed the franchise tag on him. Reports indicated that the tag is non-exclusive, which means that Bryant can negotiate with other teams, and the Cowboys have the right to match any offer, or receive two first-round picks as compensation.
