Kreitz's father raced modifieds in Pennsylvania in the 1960's and 70's. Don Jr. helped out at the family's parts shop as a youngster and eventually began racing modifieds against his dad. He began racing sprint cars in 1983, winning the URC season championship in his rookie year.

Kreitz has 190 sprint car event wins and eight track championships. Perhaps his biggest victory was in 1986, when he was a surprise winner of the prestigious Kings Royal race at Eldora Speedway.
In 2012, Kreitz is going into semi-retirement and will mentor new driver Ryan Smith in Kreitz's #69 car.
