The Dubuque County Courthouse was constructed of red brick and Bedford limestone. Its Beaux Arts architectural style was just becoming popularized when it was built in 1891. A 190 foot high central tower is capped with a bronze statue of Lady Justice that is 14 feet tall. When it was originally constructed, twelve other pewter statues were also on the building. The missing statues were taken down during World War I and melted down to provide material for the war effort. The Dubuque County Courthouse was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
