Eareckson Air Station

Eareckson Air Station

Shemya, Alaska (AK), US
Eareckson Air Station, formerly known as Shemya Air Force Base, is located on the island of Shemya, Alaska. The base was also referred to as "The Black Pearl" or "The Rock." It is the most westerly of the 11th Air Force bases and is located approximately 1,500 miles from Anchorage near the tip of the Aleutian Island chain. There are a couple of phased-array radars and a few dozen other very interesting looking antennas at Shemya. Spent two weeks there, that was enough.

I spent 6 months at Shemya in the mid-80's. It's really not that bad, though there was little to do other than drinking...

I spent one year here ('61-'62). Air Force. Working, eating, sleeping, drinking, basketball, movies, pumping iron, and fleeing to the landing strip when a commercial plane arrived (to view the females), Never will forget the experience. Work was very interesting.

My daddy did 2 tours there. He loved Alaska. He told me so many interesting stories about feeding everyone there. I sure do miss his stories.

I did a year Jan 77-Jan 78. I was in Civil Engineering, Snow Removal…in the winter it was 12 on 12 off 7 days a week. It sucked in 77, but from the new photos I seen in the 90’s they really modernize the Base and up graded the Buildings…God Bless all my Brothers and Sisters that did their time on “The Rock”

I did a year there as an admin from 1972 to 1973. Walked around the island in 1/2 a day. Fed the foxes. Enjoyed parties at the smokehouses. Enjoyed sex with a man. It was fabulous. Have now been with my current husband 20.5 years. I really enjoyed my stay on the rock.

TDY there parts of ‘74-‘75 in Army Corps of Engineers as a Project Engineer on new Cobra Dane power plant. One Friday, mail plane due, 50-60 mph crosswinds, no mail today. But wait, checked the box late that afternoon and there it was. Those Reeve Aleutian Electra pilots were flat Somethin’ else. One of many treasured adventures on Shemya, Japanese for “Island Home.”
