Edsel Ford was the son of pioneering automaker Henry Ford. He sold the historic home, known has 'Gate House' to playwright Philip Barry, who wrote The Philadelphia Story at the house. The home’s next famous owner, John Walker III, lived there between 1992 until his death in 1995. The director of the National Gallery in Washington until his retirement in 1969, Walker was “unbelievably educated, one of the great Renaissance men." Upon his death at age 88, The New York Times eulogized the “patrician art connoisseur,” as the man who “shaped the museum into a world-class institution.” It is rumored on the island that Hepburn and Spencer Tracy rendezvoused at Gate House during their semi-secret 26-year affair.
