In September of 1961, Hurricane Esther passed over Nantucket as a Category 3 storm and some of the damage done included cutting off the western part of the island from the rest of Nantucket Island. This new island was officially named Esther Island but called Esther's Island by locals (the U.S. government tries to never include possessive apostrophes in geographic names.)
At some point the islands were reconnected and Esther's Island was technically no longer an island again. That changed yet again when a powerful storm hit New England on April 19, 2007. Once again Esther's Island was separated from the rest of Nantucket Island, again.
In mid-October 2009, re-connection of Esther Island was complete (again) and today it is no longer an island . . . again.
