Description: Florida State Prison (FSP), also known as Starke Prison (because of its proximity to Starke, Florida), formerly known as the Union Correctional Institution – East Unit,[1] or the Raiford State Penitentiary is a correctional facility located in Raiford, Union County, FL. It is locted on State Road 16 right across the border from Bradford County. For this reason, the location is often cited as Starke, but this is incorrect. The institution opened in 1961, even though construction was not completed until 1968. Today, the prison serves as a maximum security facility, housing Florida's most dangerous inmates. Currently housing over 1,400 inmates, FSP is one of the largest prisons in the state. FSP houses one of the state's three death row cell blocks and the state's execution chamber with Old Sparky are located at the penitentiary. Union Correctional Institution and Lowell Annex also house male and female death row inmates, respectively. Lethal injection became the standard method of execution in 2000. The electric chair is only used if the condemned person requests it.

Anonymous's picture That is not Florida State Prison. That is Union Correctional Institution. FSP is to the right and down (it is the building that looks like a key or comb). To its left is New River West. Slightly above that is the O-unit and accross the street on the right is New River East.

jbottero's picture The complex *as a whole* and *including* the *former* Union Correctional Institution is now known as the Florida State Prison.

Anonymous's picture No, jbottero, you are wrong. Take it from someone that works there. The first anonymous statement was correct.
