This first generation of the Ford Explorer was released in March of 1990 as a 1991 model, replacing the outgoing Bronco II, to compete with other mid-size SUVs such as the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer and the Jeep Cherokee. Upon release, it was available in XT, XLT, and Eddie Bauer trims, with a Limited edition joining the lineup for 1993. However, it was the subject of scrutiny as tire failures involving Firestone tires that were also fitted on the Ford Ranger, were responsible for 240 deaths and at least 3,000 injuries nationwide. How Ford initially recommended that the pressure for all 4 tires to be 26 pounds per square inch, and how SUVs and pickup trucks in general having higher centers of gravity, didn't help either.
