Former Southampton Row Ramp for the Kingsway Tram Subway

London, United Kingdom (GB)
The Southampton Row Ramp was part of the Kingsway Tram Subway that went under Kingsway, a busy central road in London.

The ramp would have taken the tramps from street level and down to the tunnel and coming from the other way would have taken them out of the tunnel and onto street level.

The tunnel lead to the two tram stations, Holborn and Aldwych, which are both abandoned. The southern end of the former tunnel is now the Strand Underpass. The two southern tunnel portals next to Waterloo Birdge have both been demolished.

The tram subway opend in 1906 and closed in 1952 due to the withdraw of the tram system in London that would be replaced by buses.

At the Southampton Row Ramp you can still see the orignial bricked road with the original rails that lead you to Holborn Station.

'The ramp would have taken the *tramps* from street level ...' trams rather than tramps, although - until a few years ago - there used to be doss-houses for anti-social elements, whinoes and hoboes on the Covent Garden side of Kingsway.
