The 'Stelling of Amsterdam' was placed on the unique World of Inheritance List of UNESCO in 1996. This 'Stelling', consists of 42 fortresses and was build around 1900. It's main task was to defend Amsterdam in times of war.

Fort Benoorden Purmerend is situated in one of these fortresses. Wijnimport J. Bart has conducted business from this fort since 1981. A colossal fortress, hidden in green and situated on a island, with walls over one metre thick, arched rooms and sphere full tasting rooms. A small vineyard 'Clos Fort' is also part of this unique location.
