The defence of the northern end of the island had been served by small open batteries, but between 1852 and 1856 these were replaced by a circular masonry fort armed with 10x16cm RMLs mounted en barbette and named Fort d'Estrées after the admiral who had captured Gorée from the Dutch in 1677.
