Fort San Geronimo is a small 17th century fort, located on the grounds of the Caribe Hilton Hotel. The fort was the foremost defense fortification in the presence of attacks by enemy forces shunning the heavy artillery of El Morro Fortress. The fort repelled attacks by Sir Francis Drake in 1595, the "Earl of Cumberland" (Sir George Clifford), in 1598 and Sir Ralph Abercromby in 1797. The coat of arms was granted by King Carlos IV of Spain to the Regiment of the City of San Juan for heroism demonstrated during the attack of the British forces in 1797.
