Frelserens Kirke

Frelserens Kirke (StreetView)
Frelserens Kirke, Church of Our Saviour, is the old church of Qaqortoq. It dates back to 1832.

In the church there is a lifebelt from the Danish ship M/S Hans Hedtoft that sank on January 30. 1959. The ship was called the Danish Titanic because the builders said it couldn't sink.

Well, on the return of it's maiden voyage it sailed into an iceberg south of Greenland.

The ring was the only item found from the ship. It was found beached on Iceland.

The stone in front of the church is a memorial to Greenlands Apostel, Hans Egede and his wife Gertrud Rask. Hans Egede brought Christianity to Greenland around 1724.
