The University of Alaska Musuem opened in 1929 displaying Otto Geist's collection of artificats and the University's small painting collection. In 1980 the current museum opened and early phases of expanding the museum began. The expansion of the musuem was completed and opened in 2005. The Museum has become the main repository for artifacts that have been collected all over the state of Alaska, displaying the natural and cultural history of Alaska.
