George Washington portrait

German-born artist George Gassner painted this portrait of the country's first President in 1837. The Vermont State Senate voted on whether or not to purchase the painting for the newly built State House. The decision was decided by a tie-breaking vote.

The State House was destroyed by a fire in 1857, but this painting was rescued. It hangs on the wall of Representatives Hall.
