Georgetown Hoyas

Georgetown Hoyas (StreetView)
The Georgetown Hoyas are the athletic teams that represent Georgetown University. The term "Hoya Saxa" (What Rocks!) was heard around campus before 1893. Nobody knows the reference, it may have been in reference to the defense or even the stones surrounding the campus. The origin is unknown. In 1920, the school sports newspaper became known as The Hoya after students petitoned for it instead of The Hilltopper. By 1928 the sports teams were known as Hoyas.
