Vacchi holds a degree in economics from Studiorum University in Bologna.

In 2011, he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for his involvement in the crash of Parmalat, the famous Italian dairy company.

Vacchi also wrote a book, called #Enjoy, which describes his decision to abandon the family firm after 20 years working for it to focus on himself, and founded a designer-watch company, ToyWatch, which he later sold. At one time, he also served as the president of Last Minute Tours, a tourism company.

In August 2017, there were reports that his yachts, properties, and shares in a golf club were seized by a bank because of a 10,500,000-euro debt. After the news, numerous parody accounts on social networks sprang up, as well as a Facebook page called “Find Gianluca Vacchi a job”.

Satellite imagery of this property shows it has a football (soccer) court, a tennis court, a helipad, a pool, and you can clearly see Gianluca's famous yellow crocodile on top of a roof of one of the structures.
