Gliwice Radio Tower, built in 1935 when the town was still German Gleiwitz, is at 118 metres perhaps the tallest wooden tower in the world. A staged attack on this radio station in on August 31, 1939 served as a pretext for Nazi Germany to invade Poland, thus starting World War II. During the cold war it was used for jamming the western medium wave transmitters broadcasting in Polish. Nowadays the Gliwice Radio Tower carries multiple transmission aerials for mobile phone services and a low power FM transmitter.
