Gortyn is an archaeological site on the island of Crete in modern-day Greece. Gortyn was an ancient Roman settlement. It was the Roman capital of Creta et Cyrenaica.

Gortyn was originally a Greek city but became allied with the Romans in 68 BC and therefore avoided destruction like many other Greek cities when the Romans invaded Greece under the command of Quintus Caecilius Metellus Creticus. The city continued to become the capital of Crete until its destruction in 828 AD when the Arabs invaded Greece.

Many of the Roman ruins are still present today. Among these ruins are the remains of temples, baths, a theatre and various other buildings.
