From 1986-2007, the Champ Car series (formerly CART) raced on a temporary 2.8 kilometer street course at Exhibition Place. In 2008, the reunification of the Champ Car and IndyCar series in February led to the cancellation of the race, but plans are in place to revive the event in 2009.

Michael Andretti won the race seven times. Al Unser Jr. and Paul Tracy each recorded two wins.
