On the 21.12.2001 the Erfurt Mayor Manfred Ruge, the Minister of the Interior Otto Schily, and the Minister President of Thuringia ceremonially presented the brand new Gunda-Niemann-Stirnemann ice sport complex to the Erfurt public.

The new ice skating arena went through its first trial by fire only 14 days later, as Erfurt hosted the European Championships in speed skating.
