This three story, octagonal, Victorian, Gothic-style Clock Tower was built in 1883 and was the Port Captain’s first office in the newly constructed harbour.

The Clock Tower was also known as the Dock Clock or Tide Gauge Tower; its original colour was white. This icon of the old docks was restored in 1997, when it was painted Red. In 2013 it was repainted Yellow for Cape Town World Design Capital 2014.

The tower was declared a Provincial Heritage Site:
