On June 4, 1978, Stern married college sweetheart Alison Berns. In October 1999, Stern announced that he and wife Alison decided to separate. They amicably divorced in 2001, ending in a settlement. Stern began a period of single living on New York City's Upper West Side.

It appears Alison still lives here in this 6,471 sq. ft. ranch house. Public records show it was built in 1968 and remodeled in 1990 which added the pool, tennis court, and detached garage. There was a "SALE BETWEEN RELATIVES" on 01/27/2000 for $439,000.
