The widow of Carl W. Smith owns this home. Smith, a former University of Virginia football player, was a successful mining executive. In 2004, Smith retired as the head of AMVEST Corp., the international coal mining, natural gas and finance company that he founded in 1961. Smith was a director of the National Mining Association, as well as a director of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. He also gave heavily to his alma mater, where his name is engraved on the clock tower overlooking Scott Stadium. In 2003, his net worth was estimated at $500 million. Carl passed away in 2005.
