Indy's Yard of Bricks

Indy's Yard of Bricks

Speedway, Indiana (IN), US
In 1909, the racing surface of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was covered with 3.2 million bricks. Over the years, segments of the racing surface were paved with asphalt. In 1961, the final section of asphalt was in place, leaving only a three feet stripe of bricks at the start/finish line.

In recent years, race winners have knelt down to kiss the bricks in their postrace celebrations.
