Called the "Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane," the hospital was opened in 1841, the first of the so-called "Kirkbride Plan", named for Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride the hospital’s first chief physician, hospitals. The plan developed by Dr Kirkbride stressed sunlight, ventilation, exercise, and privacy for patients. The hospital remained opened until 1997 when economic forces required its closing.
