James Graham Kenan III is a descendant of Mary Lily Kenan, the third wife of Henry Morrison Flagler, who is among the 50 wealthiest Americans of all time. Flagler was a founder of Standard Oil along with John D. Rockefeller, who is widely regarded as the wealthiest man in history. He was called the "father of Miami, Florida" and founded the city of Palm Beach, which he turned into an international tourist destination. Kenan controls his family's coal operations as Chairman of Kentucky River Coal Corporation, and previously worked at J.P. Morgan, the banking giant associated with the Rockefeller family.

As Chairman of Breakers Palm Beach, he controls the resort hotel that was build by Henry Flagler. The historic AAA Five Diamond resort is set on 140 acres and is one of a small number to remain family owned.
