Namath had many offers from Division I college football programs, including Penn State, Ohio State, Alabama, and Notre Dame, but accepted an offer from the University of Maryland. He was rejected by Maryland because his college-board scores were below the school's requirements. He then accepted a full scholarship to the University of Alabama Crimson Tide under coach Paul "Bear" Bryant from 1962 to 1964. His professional football career started in 1965 when he was selected by the New York Jets as its 12th overall pick in the first round of the 1965 NFL Draft in the American Football League (AFL) with the New York Jets, where he played most of his career, and ended in the National Football League (NFL) with the Los Angeles Rams.

His career spanned the 1960s and 1970s. He played 143 career games with 68 wins, 71 losses and 4 ties. In his 132 career starts he was 64–64–4, and he was 4–7 coming off the bench in relief. In his career he threw 173 touchdowns, 220 interceptions, and completed 1,886 passes for 27,663 yards. He earned one league championship (1968 AFL Championship) and one Super Bowl victory (Super Bowl III). He made his name as one of the most popular players in the football industry, and in 1985 he was elected to the Hall of Fame.

In 1999, he was ranked number 96 on The Sporting News‍ ' list of the 100 Greatest Football Players.

Namath went on to a minor career as an actor, including C.C. and Company in 1970, and he starred in a brief 1978 television series, The Waverly Wonders. He guest-starred on many television shows, including The Love Boat, Married... with Children, Here's Lucy, The Brady Bunch, The Flip Wilson Show, Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, The Dean Martin Show, The Simpsons, The A-Team, ALF and The John Larroquette Show.

Namath was guest host on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson several times, as well as hosting his own show, the 1969 cult classic The Joe Namath Show. He appeared as T.J. on The A-Team. In 2012, Namath was honored by the Ride of Fame and a double decker tour bus was dedicated to him in New York City. He also appeared as himself in the 2013 sports film Underdogs and the 2015 comedy film The Wedding Ringer.

His net worth is 18 Million.

On July 24, 2015, in Tequesta, Florida, where Namath lives (along Florida's Atlantic Ocean coastline), two 14-year-old boys, his neighbor Perry Cohen and Austin Stephanos, did not return from a fishing trip (last seen that night in the Jupiter, Florida area buying fuel for their 19-foot boat). Namath offered a $100,000 reward for their safe return, at a news conference with the boys' families.

Hi Joe. Long time Kansas City Chiefs fan here. Saw you play at Municipal Stadium in September of 1968 in a 20-19 Jets victory over the Chiefs and knew your team was gonna be good that season. Very VERY HAPPY that you beat the Raiders in the AFL Championship Game and then won Super Bowl 3 over the Colts and the NFL!!! That was HUUUUGE!!! Along with Otis Taylor, you were one of my early heroes growing up in Kansas City. I hope you are well and that all is good in your life Joe. Would love to meet you and talk with you sometime Joe. The coffee is on me.
P.S. YOU DID IT!!!! Long Live the AFL!

Just read Joe's book All The Way for the second time. I grew up in a small town near Beaver Falls and have always followed his life. My sister remembers Joe when she was a teacher at BFHS. Stay well, my friend.

Joe, I had the biggest crush on you. My sister and I had season tickets to the Jets in the 70s and 80, first at Shea stadium then the Meadowlands. We always had bets with our cousins who lived in Florida that the Jets were going to beat them. I have fond memories of those cold days sitting at Shea in the snow, ice, wind, rain, but we were die hard Jets fans and were not leaving until the end of the game. Thanks, Joe, for the memories. Hope to meet you someday. Stay safe, Mary
